First Place: PA250 Photo Contest Exhibition at Sans MOCO Gallery
In 2026, my landscape photograph "Autumn Wolf Creek" was awarded First Place in the PA250 Photo Contest Exhibition, exhibited at Sans MOCO Gallery in Greenville, Pennsylvania. Here's what the experience of entering a juried physical exhibition taught me about creative risk and editorial confidence.
The PA250 Photo Contest went out across the state for Pennsylvania's 250th anniversary — an open call to photograph what the Commonwealth actually looks like, feels like, and means. I almost didn't enter. Physical juried shows are brutally competitive, the judges know exactly what they're looking at, and "First Place" isn't a thing you plan on.
The winning image, "Autumn Wolf Creek," came from a secluded bend of Wolf Creek right as the fall canopy peaked. Gold, amber, and deep green arched over the water, and the creek went still enough to hold a near-perfect mirror of the trees, a few loose leaves drifting across the surface. I stood there waiting for the wind to drop so the reflection would settle. When it finally did, it stopped feeling like a photograph and started feeling like the landscape repeating itself.
Winning First Place at Sans MOCO Gallery in Greenville reminded me of something I keep relearning: the most honest images — the ones you make for yourself, with no audience in mind — are almost always the ones that land. That energy is impossible to fake, and you can't manufacture it in post.
So here's my advice to anyone eyeing a juried show. Enter the work that feels true to you. Chasing what you imagine the judges want is where most photographers lose their way.
